Guitar Lessons for Beginners Acoustic – How To Play Guitar for Beginners Theory Diatonic Harmony

9th June 2010

Go to http://yourguitarsage.com/ This video shows you how to formulate major scales on the guitar and teaches you the basics of diatonic harmony. This is a supplement to the detailed ebook that you can find at http://yourguitarsage.com
Also you find out how to get a free charts to 100s of songs!!! This online instructional book covers charts, chords, strumming and the techniques that I use here in my videos.. For more guitar lessons, see my other free tutorials. For original and cover music by me, Erich, go to http://www.myspace.com/erichandreas . Since I’m so busy making new video tutuorial lessons all the time and teaching guitar, I probably won’t have time to answer individual questions regarding guitar. Other videos cover beginner, advanced and intermediate levels. I teach rock, blues, country and just about any other style on electric or acoustic. If you can’t find your answer from the resources at the website above, keep digging into my vids, and I’m sure you will find your answer. Keep practicing!!!

    You didn’t really …
You didn’t really tell us what “diatonic harmony” is or where it comes in… you just explained the major scale and its construction. Is diatonic scale just another name for the major scale?

  12. Addiction747 Says:

The note on the 5th …
The note on the 5th fret of every string is the open note of the next string, the 6th fret is the 1st fret of the next string, the 7th the 2nd note of the next string, and so on. (the only exception is that the 4th fret of the G string is the open note of the B string). That’s all you need to know to play across the fretboard.

  14. ragerpez Says:

    learn one octave of …
learn one octave of the scale, say A major for instance, and get someone to play an A major chord for you and have a little play with the scale. this is pretty much the basis for guitar solos as well as melody/vocal lines.

when your backing is playing A major chord in this instance, some notes in the A major scale will be ‘stronger’ (more CONSONANT) than others, at first stick with the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes in the scale then add more in as you get more confident on the fretboard

stick close to the 1 3 5 of the scale and repeat 7ths are great lead tones if your going to add color (a chromatic note) make sure it leads into a strong beat. nothing to it really

    Super helpful lesson!
I have a question, dunno if you read this or not but…

how to do you play across like that? the patterns that is? I get the concept of whole scale – half scale pattern, but not sure how to take it to the next level I guess. Do you memorize the pattern and then just transpose it to the next key? Is this something you could do in another lesson? :)
