what is the best way to learn to play guitar without lessons?
31st August 2010
My brother gave up on guitar because hes too darn lazy, so i thought i would give guitar a try like I’ve always wanted to. But money is a little tight right now and I cant afford lessons. Please give links if possible.
P.S. I have absolutely no experience with guitar except for maybe trying to play, just messing around.
Learn basic chords. Then learn songs which are made up of those chords by watching videos of the guitar playing on YouTube and use tabs from ultimate-guitar.com. After you master the chords, you can begin learning barre chords. After that, learn scales and theory.

Go to a music store and buy a book on scales and a book on chords. They should only cost about 10 bucks each and the are the foundation of any musical instrument.

Method One
Learn to read tabs at http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/lessons/the-basics/how-to-read-guitar-tab/
Then go to http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and look up some of your favorite songs.
In the beginning it’s best to pick songs that are simple, but the most important thing to remember is to pick songs that you’re really determined to play. If you don’t like what you’re playing, why practice?
Method Two
Go to http://www.guitarchordsmagic.com/basic-guitar-chords/basic-guitar-chords.html and learn basic chords.
Then venture over to http://www.ehow.com/how_4599_strum-guitar.html and learn some strumming patterns.

Yeah i agree with the other guy on here, purchase a chord book, but also;
- Purchase a beginner book just to get some basics
- Play what YOU want, not what a teacher tells you too
- Practice alot
i’ve played guitar for about 2 years now, and thats what i did.

I play guitar in my band. We do classic punk, hardcore punk, grindcore, etc. I learned entirely from playing 70s/80s punk songs. First, I played Misfits songs. Their songs are extremely easy to play. I learned my first song, Some Kinda Hate by the Misfits, 2 hours after I started playing for the first time. From there, I learned every song on Static Age, Walk Among Us, and Earth A.D. Then I went to many other punk bands and selectively played some of their songs. These bands include but are not limited to The Dead Kennedys (although they use barre chords I replace them with power chords), The Damned, The Dead Boys, Minor Threat, old AFI, MDC, Black Flag, Middle Class, Inside Out, etc. Then I took the next step and learned some Bad Brains songs. Now I’m 7 months into playing the guitar and I can play very well.
These are some songs to start off with. They are all by The Misfits. Do explore other songs by them, these are just examples.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/misfits/hybrid_moments_tab.htm
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/misfits/skulls_ver2_tab.htm
Then once you got these songs down, go for these. Again, it wouldn’t hurt to explore other songs from these artists.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/minor_threat/minor_threat_ver3_tab.htm
I can’t put more than 10 links in here, so add these songs:
-Egg Raid On Mojo by Beastie Boys
-Straight Edge by Minor Threat
-Kill The Poor by Dead Kennedys
-Out Of Vogue by Middle Class
It is mostly nothing but power chords throughout all of these songs, that’s just the nature of punk, but for someone with no experience, it is great to get a start here. Hope that helped.
