There’s been a surge of people learning to play the guitar at home over the past ten years. Fueled by baby boomers with more time, less expensive instruments and of course the Internet. It is a lot easier to teach yourself guitar then ever before.
If you don’t use a quality dvd guitar lessons or online video you risk making some mistakes while learning that will be more difficult to correct down the road. For the remainder of the article I’m going to explain to you the three most noticeable errors new guitar players make. So if you’re a beginner or have been teaching yourself pay close attention, if you’re making or have made any of these mistakes now is the time to fix them.
Correct Left Hand Positioning
Frequently I notice beginners with their thumb popping up over the top E string on the neck. Beginner guitar players should learn proper form and positioning right from the start. Starting out with the wrong habits should be fixed right away because it’s a lot tougher to change it later. Ensuring that your thumb is positioned correctly on the back of the neck allows your fingers to be nimble and move quickly over the neck to make fast chord changes or pick quickly.
Tips of Fingers on Frets
Along with improper hand positioning comes using the fleshy part of your finger tip on the frets rather then just the tip. Why is this important? More complex chords are learned as you become an intermediate guitar player and advance your skill level. Not using your finger tip can lead to blunting other strings and not getting the proper sound from your guitar while strumming.
Learning the Neck
This last mistake is usually over looked because it’s boring and beginners don’t see any benefit to learning it. The primary step to becoming a great player is memorizing the notes and neck of the guitar for each string. Any one who wants to learn acoustic guitar should take this on in the first several months, it’s the key skill that will allow you to become great. All great lead guitar players know their way around the guitar neck and every note on each string like the back of their hand.
If you notice yourself doing any of those above mentioned mistakes I’d recommend trying to fix it now. Trust me when I say it’s a lot easier to learn it correctly now then in four or five years.
