Guitar tabs is the shortened term for tablature which comes from the Latin word “Tabula”. Tabula means slate or table when translated in the English language. Put simply, to tabulate is to put something on charts or on tables.

In tablature, one uses instrument fingering, thus not using the musical pitches.
